You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
Your small hands reach in for the grab
To take over a drink you can’t have
My coquito has history
Of our land
For our people
Hard for you to understand
There’s no equal
You bark from the grandstand
There’s no equal
You’ll never understand
You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
Coconut, condensed, and evaporated milk
Cream of coconut and RUM, RUM, RUM!
Mix in cinnamon
With vanilla extract
Blend it with passion
No two are ever alike
And you’ll never get it son
This ain’t no Orange Julius!
Take a listen:
You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
There are many coquito creation stories
Here’s one
Back in 1898
Puerto Rico became a territory
Of the US of A
It was said that US soldiers
Shared a milky drink with eggs and rum.
Upon tasting it, the islanders said,
“Ay Dios mio! Que es esso?! No, no, NO!”
The Puerto Ricans reinvented it
With local ingredients:
Cream of coconut, coconut milk,
Condensed milk, cinnamon,
And some of the best rum in the world.
Coquito was born!
As with all myths there are disagreements:
No eggs vs. eggs
Nutmeg vs. cinnamon
Cooking vs. blending
Independent vs. colo-mmonweath
51st vs. sovereign free associated state
But I implore you, my compays
Let us not fall into despair
There are many that would like to
Capitalize on our special elixir.
Our passion!
And discard us
Once they’ve mastered
The recipe.
I say pa’lante
Pa’lante!...with coquito!
If you’ll fight with me
And you want to know
What it tastes like
This lovely coquito
Sing!
You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
You can’t take my coquito away!
